You Will Enjoy The Numerous Benefits Of Installing Fireplace Logs
Ceramic gas logs are a “no-brainer” replacement for traditional wood logs
The crackling sound of an intimate fire on a bleak winter’s night, the life-giving heat that holds back the cold and covers you with its delicate touch, the deep, rich smell of burning wood, and the stone fireplace which radiates heat from its hard heart. Ahhhhh, the memories.
They aren’t my memories, certainly, and probably not yours either, in case you were raised in the city. But if this is what you see when you look back, then I am positive you will also recall spending many hours shoveling out the fireplace, sweeping the chimney, splitting and stacking the wood, and inhaling the smoke, ash, and fumes. I start coughing just thinking about it.
All of the bad memories will be a thing of the past, and only the good ones will remain, if you begin using ceramic gas-burning logs instead of real wood. Being ceramic means they will last for many years while burning either propane or natural gas. There are two basic types of logs: vented and vent-free or ventless. Learn more about ceramic fiber logs, gas logs and fireplace mantles.
Vented gas logs sit in the fireplace the same as natural wood logs. The flames wrap around the logs and dance along the outsides like devilish sprites. That is, of course, until you get bored watching them and turn the flames off with a remote. Vented gas logs offer an attractive option to wood burning, however this works only when you have a fireplace in your home, or the additional room to build one.
What about the vast number of people who are more living-space-challenged? Nowadays, apartment-dwelling city folk will have memories, too, by using vent-free ceramic gas logs. This typeof fireplace can be portable and they produce a small but pleasing blue flame. A great thing about vent-free logs is they produce more heat than a wood burning appliance with the same capacity. The reason is the logs are constructed using a material that allows heat to radiate outwards after it reaches a certain temperature. The dense, refractory material used to construct these logs so they are realistic in appearance and efficient in heat output, also allows you to enjoy your fireplace without the cleanup of ashes, wood dust and messy shavings. Because they are self-contained (that is, no vent), all of the heat produced remains within the room. The drawbacks to vent-free logs are the increase in humidity, needing oxygen and carbon monoxide detectors (which sometimes come with the unit), and the need for fresh air (crack a window) if the fireplace has been running for more than an hour.
Which type of gas-burning logs you decide on will depend on a balance between aesthetics, functionality, and convenience. The vented log will look real and set a cozy ambiance, but it won’t give off much heat since most of that goes up the chimney. The vent-free fireplaces and logs are easier to place and more “green”, but the flame is less realistic and the logs require more effort to maintain safety.
